10 Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Diet While Vacationing

Whether you are enjoying spring break at the beach or visiting grandchildren across the world, it can take a bit of extra effort to maintain healthy eating habits while away from home. Try using these strategies to maintain your regular routine no matter where you are.

1. Plan Ahead

Take the time to plan ahead to ensure you don't get stuck without options. Whether that means researching restaurants and food stores before you leave home or planning food times and stops throughout the day while you are away is completely up to you. 

2. Fill Up on Veggies

Vegetables are one of the few foods that you pretty much can't go overboard on. Fill up on vegetables when you are in restaurants. Order a salad to have when you sit down. This can help keep your appetite under control so you eat smaller portions of the main dish and dessert. Asking about vegetarian options can also be a great idea, especially if you are traveling to an area that specializes in them. 

3. Pack Snacks

You don't have to pack a suitcase full of snacks, but grabbing some fruit, granola bars, or other healthy options when you head out in the morning can keep the munchies at bay so you don't cave in to hunger and cravings as the day wears on. Stop at a grocery store or market when you first arrive at your destination to stock up on a few easy to carry snack items to make your life and trip a little easier. 

4. Try Regional Fare

Stay away from chain and fast-food restaurants when you travel. Small, local establishments are more likely to offer fresh ingredients and healthy options to help you stay on track toward your health and fitness goals. Ask hotel staff where they enjoy eating, or look at local reviews online so you know where to start. Just don't be surprised if a quaint cafe ends up being one of the highlights of your trip. 

5. Prepare Your Own Meals

Hotel suites with kitchenettes can be worth the extra expense when you consider that you will be able to prepare at least some of your own meals. This is particularly helpful if you have to watch out for food interactions like those from tomatoes and lectins or you have an allergy. 

6. Visit Local Markets

Fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers and street markets can really add an authentic touch to your vacation. It can also be an excellent opportunity to try new ingredients and dishes that you may not have even heard of before. 

7. Bring a Water Bottle

There are probably at least a half dozen reusable water bottles in your kitchen cabinets, so it shouldn't be too hard to remember to take one with you when you go away. Be sure to fill it up before you leave your hotel in the morning, and then keep it full throughout the day. This will help you avoid dehydration, which is important for staying healthy. It can also help you eat less as the water can reduce feelings of hunger. 

8. Eat Breakfast

Grab a healthy and filling breakfast before you get started in the morning. This can help give you energy for whatever activities you decide to try and may minimize the chances of a midmorning stop for pastries. Aim for a good mix of complex carbohydrates from whole grains and lean proteins like those from eggs or yogurt for the best results. 

9. Share Meals

If you are traveling with someone else, consider sharing meals when you eat out. This can take what is otherwise an unrealistic food portion and make it much more manageable. Plus, you avoid any of the guilt of wasting food that you have no way to store or reheat in your room.   

10. Allow Yourself to Indulge

Understand that it is perfectly alright to indulge on a decadent dessert or regional specialty. Give yourself permission to enjoy the treat, knowing you are eating healthy and responsibly during the rest of your trip. 

A vacation doesn't have to derail healthy eating habits unless you allow it to. Try using these strategies the next time you are away from home to keep your wellness goals in direct sight.
