Wait for the Lord
God loves you—you can trust Him to do what is best for you.

Psalm 130:5-8

5 I wait for the LORD, my soul does wait, And in His word do I hope.
6 My soul waits for the Lord More than the watchmen for the morning; Indeed, more than the watchmen for the morning.
7 O Israel, hope in the LORD; For with the LORD there is lovingkindness, And with Him is abundant redemption.
8 And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.

Trusting God’s timing can be incredibly difficult when everything within us cries, “Do something!” When we’re dealing with a painful or challenging situation, we want action, so waiting for God feels passive.
To wait for the Lord means to pause for further instruction while remaining in the present circumstance. It is a purposeful, expectant focus on God—a choice to be still and quiet in our heart while listening for His voice and watching for His intervention (Psalm 46:10 ``Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
At times, God will change a situation to redirect us, or He will motivate another person to give guidance. However, always remember that any advice or direction we’re given must align with the Lord’s will as revealed in His Word; otherwise, it is not from Him.
The first step in waiting for the Lord is submission to His choice of how and when He will act. What are you hoping God will do? Are you seeking Him, or are you seeking only the thing that you want from Him? Since He alone knows what is best for you, let go and trust His decision.

Ponder This

Grace is the free gift of God. You’re not saved by joining a church, getting baptized, singing in the choir, preaching a sermon, or coming to church. You’re saved by the grace of God. There’s no way to earn it. Works don’t save and works don’t help save. Romans 11:6 says, “And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.” You can’t mix grace and works. If it’s by grace, forget your good works. Baptism, whether a spoonful or a tankful, can’t take away your sin. Your prayers, your pilgrimages, anything you do, cannot take away your sin.

The grace of God is not only a saving grace it is also a securing grace. Do you know why you have eternal security? Because you’re saved by grace. Now, if you were saved by works and your works failed, you’d lose your salvation. But grace can never fail. This was Paul’s point in Galatians 3:3. The Spirit that saved you is the Spirit that’s going to perfect you and carry you all the way through.
• Have you been tempted to try to earn God’s favor? Why won’t that work?
• How can you remind yourself salvation is only possible through grace?

The Source of Our Identity
The God of all creation says you are chosen, precious, and called to live in His marvelous light.

1 Peter 2:9-10

9 But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
10 for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.

How often do we evaluate ourselves based on our feelings instead of what God says? The problem is, our feelings are constantly changing.
Maybe today is one of those days—the car didn’t start, your boss has been breathing down your neck, the mortgage payment is due, and money is short. Remember, Satan will do whatever he can to divert your attention from the Lord. When we direct our focus toward circumstances instead of God, we can easily miss what He is telling us.
Take a look at what the Scriptures say about believers. Today’s passage calls us “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, [and] . . . God’s own possession.” And our purpose is to “proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called [us] out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
How encouraging it is to know that we’ve been called into God’s marvelous light. Yet unless we have help, we’re unable to escape the darkness of our troubles. When circumstances seem unbearable, remember that “you have been bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.) Wake up each morning with the knowledge that you’re valuable to your Father. Trust in His Word, not your feelings. And allow the Holy Spirit to change your self-perception.

Ponder This

If there’d been some other way for you to be saved apart from the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, do you think God would have taken it? Be reasonable. Are you going to tell me that God allowed His precious Son to die the most humiliating, agonizing death a man has ever known, when there was some other way for us to be saved?

The beautiful thing about the Gospel is that God thought it and Jesus bought it. God planned it out; it didn’t originate with Man. And Jesus bought it with His own precious blood. The only reason you seek the Lord is because He first sought you. Don’t get the idea that you thought it up by yourself.
Romans 3:11 says, “There is none who seeks after God.” You may ask, “But why then do I have this hunger? Why do I have this thirst for God?” Because He gave it to you. Let’s think about a natural thirst. We all get thirsty for liquid. Why do we get thirsty? Because God created us where we would have a thirst. Had God not created us with thirst, we would never get thirsty. The thirst for God in you is a gift of God. It pleased God to do this. So, the grace that saved you is
from the God who loves you and is seeking for you.

• When was a time you were thirsty for God?
