ATTENTION SAN ANTONIO

San Antonio city elections are coming quick. We've reached out to candidates and few have responded to put their position on toll roads on the record so voters know where they stand.

For District 9 councilman, Patrick Von Dohlen received an A+. Incumbent John Courage received a C-, due to his support for the city's climate adaptation plan that is anti-car and intentionally seeks to tax you out of your car and into mass transit, raise taxes on energy consumption, and implement a tax on entering the city limits if you drive solo in your own vehicle.

Current incumbent Mayor Ron Nirenberg also received a 'D' on TURF's Voter Guide due to his creation of the anti-car climate adaptation plan and rabid support for it. None of his opponents have returned our survey.

We also recommend a NO vote on both Prop A (would give local government a blank check to enter into unlimited bond debt without coming to the voters) and Prop B (which is a defacto method for de-funding police).

Early voting begins: April 19-27

ELECTION DAY: May 1

Contact House Committee Chair to get relief from excessive toll fines/fees NOW!

Our reform bills need a hearing NOW to have a chance of passing

House Transportation Committee Chair Terry Canales (D - Edinburg) has yet to give our bills a hearing. HB 3314 and HB 1117 need a hearing next week, or they have little chance of passing. Same goes for Senator Robert Nichols (R - Jacksonville) who chairs Senate Transportation. Our senate bills are SB 756 and SB 1000.

ACTION ALERT:
Help us get a hearing on our bills!

Contact -
Senate Transportation Committee Chair Robert Nichols at (512) 463-0103 or at robert.nichols@senate.texas.gov

Politely ask him to give our two priorities bills a hearing next week. Leave name, number, county you live in.

SB 756 (Kolkhorst/Hall) - TOLL CESSATION: To remove the toll once the road is paid for.

SB 1000 (Hall/Kolkhorst) - TOLL BILLING REFORM: To cap excessive toll fines & fees, remove criminal penalty for unpaid tolls, & more.

HB 1117 (Shaheen) - TOLL CESSATION: To remove the toll once the road is paid for.

HB 3314 (Cain) - TOLL BILLING REFORM: To cap excessive toll fines & fees, remove criminal penalty for unpaid tolls, & more.

Meanwhile, here's what they are hearing...

HB 2081 (Reynolds) - To create a $4,000 jailable criminal offense for a car accident involving a pedestrian, someone in a golf cart or other mobility device.

HB 2306 (Fierro) - To allow a county to report you to Dept of Motor Vehicles nad have your vehicle registration BLOCKED if you have any unpaid taxes owed to your county!

HB 3515 ( Thompson, Ed) - To END competitive bidding if TxDOT deems it 'impractical.'

HB 3956 (Kuempel) - To increase vehicle registration (fee hike even though Gov. Abbott promised to fix our roads without raising taxes, fees, using tolls or debt!).

HB 4532 (Ortega) - To allow Regional Mobility Authorities (primarily funded with road and toll funds) to do aesthetic green space projects, pedestrian and bike facilities, parking projects that directly benefit transit facilities, or projects that merely promote 'economic development.'

You can weigh in on these bills that are anti-driver and do not reflect the priorities of WE THE PEOPLE by submitting comments online OPPOSING these wasteful bills.

Some GOOD news...

SB 1727 (Nichols) - Senator Nichols is hearing his bill to STOP Harris County from issuing debt to take cash out of its toll system to spend on non-road projects (flood control, etc.) by forming a local government corporation. Current law prohibits such an action, yet Harris County Commissioners voted to do so anyway last year.
