I have had the pleasure of meeting him, and hearing him speak: he was the keynote speaker at a conference I attended, some years ago. He can be quite the curmudgeon, but having met him, I believe that it's because he cares so deeply about the well-being of people and culture.
Our Founders were not only possessed of towering intellects, but also of a level of education in Classics, history, literature, philosophy, and political philosophy which few today could match, either in or outside the academy – and certainly few politicians! We discount their insights, or minimize their importance, at our great peril.
We live in troubling times! :-(
