Have you ever thought about what we really actually “OWN” in this life?

Sure, we may have luxurious cars, fancy clothes, plentiful cash, profitable portfolios, beautiful homes, and all the trappings that make life fun, easy and comfortable. For others this may also be amazing artistic or athletic capabilities, excellent credentials, exalted titles, impressive offices or high-ranking positions. Lastly for some it could also include beautiful looks, talent and fame. However at life’s end, what do you really “HAVE”??

The stark reality - when you look at it truthfully - is that We Have NOTHING.

While we come into this life as naked, vibrant babies full of promise, we often leave this world as old, weathered and often sick, feeble, forgotten persons. At the moment of death, everything that we have “Owned” in this life becomes a mere memory and disconnected from our eternal reality.

The key to true wealth is realizing that “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:21) If it is based on God and not the trappings of this world, then the Bible says that “(we are) heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ“ That means that all that your Heavenly Father created as his child is yours, both in this life, and the next! There could be no greater riches than that!

While it is more than OK to have material things in this life, do not let your possessions possess you. They are temporary and will fade away. Thank God for your blessings and remember:

“Set your affection on things above,
not on things on the earth.”
Colossians 3:2-3

A high-wire walker dazzled crowds at a fair. Far below, people looked up in amazement as he traversed the wire repeatedly carrying various objects of even the most complex shapes and weights repeatdly with ease and grace.

Seeing a small boy below mesmerized by what he saw he said to the lad, “Come up here with me and I will also carry you safely across!”

But the little boy said he didn’t think so.

The man earnestly called out again to him, “Do you believe I can do it?!?” to which the lad replied,

“YES! I DO believe you can. I’m just not sure that I can trust my life in your hands.”

This is also how many people also view God. While they've heard his call to trust in Him, like that boy, they stay where they are and are afraid to completely place their life in his hands.

Just believing that God exists is not enough, but instead both Believing and Trusting that he has your best interests in heart. As today’s scripture says, when you do you will be blessed, and he will never let you fall!

Friend, is that you? If so, consider these words of assurance from 2 Timothy 1:12...

“For I KNOW whom I have believed AND AM PERSUADED that HE IS ABLE to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.”

Will you take that step today and move from 'Belief' to TRUST?

SinfulBabyThere’s nothing cuter than babies! Their expressions of wonderment, inquisitive nature of the world, precious expressions and interaction with parents and others are always entertaining and heartwarming – that is…until the first temper tantrum!

That’s right! If you have been a parent or a dotting uncle or aunt, you’ve seen these fits of displeasure, anger and even rage by these budding 'little angels!' Then when the terrible twos come, there are the outbursts of “Mine!”, “NO!”, and “I DON’T WANT TO!!!”

The truth is we do not have to be taught how to sin because we are all born with it. Romans 5:12 says that when Adam sinned, sin entered into the world and all of us have inherited sin as part of our human nature, and with the nature of sin comes the curse of physical death, but also spiritual death. But here’s the Good News (literally the meaning of the word 'Gospel.'

While we were all born into sin, we can be free from it through Christ who conquered both sin and death at His cross. What is required from you to receive this victory over sin and death is simple. Agree with God that you are a sinner, ask Him to forgive you of your sins and decide to change your mind about following your natural sinful ways and yield your life to Christ as the one who directs your life, instead of your natural sinful self.

Is this easy? NO! The life of discipleship (i.e. discipline) to follow Christ requires putting off your old ways and living a life that leads to eternal life. While we will never completely stop sinning and making mistakes in this life, we can through Christ put on his nature and share in his victory over sin and death

We are, by nature, just like those little babies, but as 1 Corinthians 13:11 tells us:

“When I was a child,
I Spake as a child,
I Understood as a child,
I Thought as a child:
But when I became a man,
I put away childish things.”

Therefore friend, put off the old nature of the temper tantrum of sin and put on the sin redeeming nature of Christ.

There is a common saying among soldiers in the midst of battle that 'There are no ATHEISTS in foxholes.' When faced with the horrors of war, dead comrades around them, and the threat of death at any time, it is human nature — be you a believer, agnostic, or atheist — to cry out to God and plead, “God Please Save Me!”

However, you do not have to be in imminent danger to turn to God — because here’s the thing. Even if you are not in a foxhole and just living your life, we ALL are in 'Imminent Danger' of death. It may not happen in the coming seconds as the soldier under battle, but it WILL happen in a coming season. When that time comes, it will be no different than that soldier because if you are not prepared and are not right with God, you will not die one death but two — first in your body, and second in your spirit.

As today’s scripture says, the Lord hears the prayers of ALL that call out to him — and you don’t have to be under fire in a foxhole to have your prayer heard! He will rescue ALL those that recognize the danger they will face in death, call out to Him, and ask Him to rescue them from this life and deliver them into the next.

Ask God to save you today from eternal death so you will be SAVED to ETERNAL LIFE! Life could end any second, and WILL end in one season. Don’t delay - pray the soldier’s prayer today, “God Please Save Me!”

One of the great tragedies of this modern, technological age is the disconnect of personal contact that many people have with one another. While we know more things faster about news and what is happening with our friends on social media, we do so in an electronic bubble that is not a bridge to others, but instead is a private wall that we silently build around us. Two experiences I had recently brought this sadly to light.

I was in Starbucks yesterday and took this picture of a mother with her daughter spending time ´together´ While the little girl sat poking at an electronic video game that boinged-and-beeped, her mother sat silently surfing the web on her smartphone. Here a perfect time of love and memory between mother and daughter was wasted seeking their own way while together - yet so far apart.

A couple of months ago I was at a high end mall on the second tier looking down at passerby’s below when I saw four very attractive young girls walking abreast in lock-step, all texting to (presumably) someone else (and almost certainly not to each other!) Here an afternoon of fun with girlfriends was wasted by not simply enjoying the moment.

Love towards others; whether it is sharing a meal together, a walk in the park, or time just visiting is always appropriate. Sadly in today’s world the simple act of simply being is not enough, as so many instead desire to “seek their own way”.

Regardless whether you are a Christian or not, please heed the wise words of today’s verse. Seek not your own way and seek the love and companionship of others. As the old saying goes, no one on their deathbed wished they had spent more time at work - and ditto for being “connected on-line” As 1 Corinthians goes on to conclude “Love Never Fails”.

Take time TODAY to BE and to LOVE.
