Nephesh is the Hebrew word for soul. It encompasses all that a person is; our fleshly body, mind, will, emotions even what we possess. When God breathed into Adam he became a "nephesh" or a living soul. In the Song of Songs the Bride says "O, thou whom my SOUL loveth" the word for "soul" again is "nephesh" and its like saying "I can't live without you. I love you with my very breath." Jesus reinterated this truth when He said that we were to love the Lord God with all our heart, soul and strength (possessions) or in other words with our "nephesh" - our entire self.
