Commonly, music has been used for conveying the emotional state of the individuals. Additionally, it is used for entertaining and relaxation. However, in some cultures music represents cultural diversity as well as uniqueness. That is why there is a necessity in producing the music that will appeal to the individuals and will have educative approach. Being a universal tool for educating and entertaining people, music conveys the important message the audience can appreciate in every particular culture.

While considering the importance of music in this prime essay, one should analyze the audience, for which it is performed. Frankly speaking, music always has a targeting audience. The reason is that the music has to convey the message, so there is a need to do it to the right listeners. For better understanding of this fact, several pieces of music will be analyzed. The first two are Javanese Gamelan: Ketawang Puspawarna and Sura Yasin (Sura 36). These two examples represent two different cultures, so the audience will vary. Javanese Gamelan: Ketawang Puspawarna is a gamelan composition which has gained popularity in Central Java (Fuller). Basically, gamelan is a type of traditional Indonesian music played by a native orchestra. The analyzed example is not an exception. The orchestra tells the story of the loved wives of Prince Mangkunegara IV of Surakarta (Capwell). In this piece, they are associated with flowers. They were very beautiful and loved by the Prince. Obviously, the audience of this music should have a relevant knowledge concerning the main themes conveyed in the song. The right listeners would be the dwellers of Central Java for whom this music will represent the high level of morality and human values. The second example is Sura Yasin (Sura 36). This music depicts the episode from Holy Quran, which is the basis for the Suras. This is a highly religious song. Consequently, the audience of it will be Muslims. The song conveys the theme of the mission of Muhammad. He wanted to persuade people that they would be punished if they refused to follow Allah. It is clear that this song is of high importance since it represents the religious ideas that are spread throughout the world. Both songs represent significant issues for the targeting audience.

Apart from the songs analyzed at class, there is a need to cover some additional examples. That is why; two pieces were selected, namely Javanese Gamelan Ensemble - Pelog Barang - Singa Nebah and Surah 37: As-Saffat - Saud Al-Shuraim. The first composition consists mainly of instrumental performance. The second one is basically the same that was analyzed at class. It is conducted by Muezzin and depicts the story form Holy Quran.

Another important issue is the structure of the music. Commonly, every type of music consists of sound, harmony, melody, rhythm, and growth. All analyzed pieces totally correspond with the mentioned structure. Javanese Gamelan: Ketawang Puspawarna and Javanese Gamelan Ensemble - Pelog Barang - Singa Nebah are instrumental songs. The sound of each one is quite loud with some decreasing and increasing parts. Moreover, the volume is variable, so there are some loud parts and some soft ones. The beginning and ending of the songs is soft, while the main part is loud. Regarding the harmony, it is quiet balanced. On the one hand, the music is quite smooth. On the other hand, there are some sharp parts. However, they are connected with each other making the harmony ideal. The melodic range is high. Speaking about the rhythm, it is fast. Approximately, it is two beats per bar. It makes the song uplifting. The last category is growth. The music develops throughout the whole composition. However, the culmination is quite emphasized. One should not forget to mention the texture of the music. It is polyphonic since it is comprised of many melodies. Other songs under our consideration are Sura Yasin (Sura 36) and Surah 37: As-Saffat - Saud Al-Shuraim, which are songs too. The sound of the songs is smooth without any loud parts. It is soft and mild as well. The harmony of the songs is connected with the sound. The melodic range is low. The rhythm is slow. The growth is calm and smooth. The mentioned characteristics totally coincide with the purpose of these songs. Their main target is to appeal to human mind. That is why these pieces are calm and pleasant.

The analyzed music can be heard at different occasions. Javanese Gamelan: Ketawang Puspawarna and Javanese Gamelan Ensemble - Pelog Barang - Singa Nebah are commonly conducted at national holidays. The songs represent traditions of the culture. Sura Yasin (Sura 36) and Surah 37: As-Saffat - Saud Al-Shuraim may be conducted at mosques during religious holidays. Moreover, they may be listened to individually at home by those who consider the importance of religion. All songs require different amount of instruments as well as musicians to be performed. Musicians use a lot of musical instruments, so they need to be highly qualified and skillful. This fact explains the locations where the songs may be performed. One should state that during some national and religious events the mentioned songs are conducted most conveniently. In the first case, the songs may be performed at public places. The second two songs may be conducted in mosques and performed by muezzin. This is a person who leads the calls to prayer.

The reasons why people create music can be different. On the one hand, it may be the desire of the person for whom music is an important part of life. That is why he/she decides to create a masterpiece to attract people’s attention. On the other hand, the necessity of the music may be more complex. For some people music is a kind of entertainment. It helps to relax and to forget about daily troubles. Furthermore, music is also used for listening while driving. It enables to concentrate on the road and enjoy the ride. However, there are some people for whom music is something bigger than entertainment. Some use music for conveying important messages to the audience. Some music may depict political, cultural, historical or social motifs. Other examples of music may convey religious motifs. Everything depends on the occasion and purpose of the song. The analyzed songs totally prove the mentioned fact. The Javanese ones are created for conveying cultural traditions. The second pair- for illustrating religious message. One may state that the purpose of the songs is the main reason for creating them. That is why music is not always connected with entertainment. It may be also used for educational aims. Consequently, the music may have several functions. Among the most common are educative, integrative, and entertaining. With the help of music it is possible to teach the listeners some information concerning the historical background of the country and its peculiarities. Moreover, the music may teach how to enjoy the beauty of art. What is more, it is possible to have the interaction between the listeners and musicians.

All in all, music plays a significant role in the contemporary culture. It enables people to relax and admire the beauty of art. Moreover, music has educational functions. It enables to teach the listeners some information about culture and history of a certain country. Moreover, music can be of different types, for example religious or entertaining. The analyzed pieces, namely Javanese Gamelan: Ketawang Puspawarna and Javanese Gamelan Ensemble - Pelog Barang - Singa Nebah, Sura Yasin (Sura 36) and Surah 37: As-Saffat - Saud Al-Shuraim prove the fact that some music depends on the place and audience, for which it will be conducted. That is why music may be both educating and entertaining.
