In a new interview on 4Gamer (translated through Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer D2R Items discussed the aesthetic of the graphics and how it's being used in the future games of the company. When the interviewer expressed surprise that more indie games haven't adopted the style, Asano revealed the reason being that it's pretty expensive!

"It's probably worth noting that it's cost is higher than you'd think. It's an excellent fit to the titles coming out of Square Enix. There's probably nothing to gain from copying other companies," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately it's not stopping Square Enix from releasing more games with this design.

A remake of Live a Live is set for release exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, while a remake for Dragon Quest III is currently being developed. There are plenty of games that could benefit from this style as well. It will certainly be fascinating to learn the next game Square Enix does with HD-2D in the future. Although the company has certainly invested in this design style, Asano went on to explain that there's no currently a "definitive Bible," and it will remain evolving with each game.

"We haven't put together anything like this. The way that it's presented differs in each movie, which means that the HD-2D flavour is different each time.
