The History of es Radio in Spain

During the Franco era, the only way to receive information in Spain was through French Radio from Toulouse. However, as the country became more democratic, a number of changes took place. Among them, the most notable was the arrival of a national radio station, branded es radio.

Aside from the Spanish Radio, there were semi-official radio stations that belonged to national trade unions and youth organizations. These stations were also free to determine the content of their news programs. In 1978, these semi-official radio stations merged into Radiocadena Espanola. This merger was followed by another one in 1988, which led to Radio Nacional de Espana.

In order to carry out its mission of transmitting news bulletins, RNE built a network of regional broadcasting centres. These were equipped with 250 to 500 kW mediumwave transmitters, which gave RNE complete coverage of Spain and the rest of Europe at night.

The first transmitter was constructed by Telefunken. The RNE's second network was constructed using FM transmitters. During the Second World War, RNE was involved in collaboration with Axis powers. In 1955, RNE became the first Spanish radio station to join the European Broadcasting Union.

The Radio Nacional de Espana is a national state owned radio broadcaster in Spain. It is operated by the public corporation Radiotelevision Espanola (RTVE), which is governed by an all-party committee of the national parliament. Its headquarters are located at the Prado del Rey in Pozuelo de Alarcon (Madrid). It has a listening audience of around 80 million, with a few more million people tuning in online.
