Monster Harvest has the potential to be an excellent game

Monster Harvest would have been better off having released as an Early Access title, as its plagued with issues across all platforms.

In Monster Harvest, you play as one of four nameable characters that are of different genders and skin tones. You have come to take over your uncle’s farm as he has become busy with the study of slimes and what he calls “planimals” – crops mutated by slime into animal hybrids. These planimals are companions who will follow you and assist in your farm. They can also be taken into battle in the slime caves.

If you die in the dungeons, there is no negative penalty, just the ever looming presence of death that hangs over the very short lived Planimals with some cases of them not even surviving a single day. So you don't lose any items or gold when you blackout, which allows players to get a bit more risky with their gameplay as there is no negative effect.

Where questionable design choices are one thing, bugs are quite another. Monster Harvest would have been better off having released as an Early Access title, as its plagued with issues across all platforms. I’ve run into minor issues where I glitched through furniture to more major ones where I can’t purchase things from the shopkeepers. Tiny text is also a problem, something developers seem to be married to despite Switch players constantly begging for bigger font. And while I saw quite a few players say they ran into a gamebreaking bug where they could no longer load and would be forced to start over, I am happy to report that particularly nasty issue hasn’t happened to me. Yet.

Monster Harvest uses a turn-based system that activates when you come into contact with the slimes. You have the option to try 3 different attacks based on your experience level. The attacks that are too high for your current level will display with a note of where you need to be in order to unlock it. These encounters are unable to be avoided as there is no “Run” option. Alongside that, if your planimal dies in battle, it is gone for good – only leaving behind residue that can be used to create more mutants.

Monster Harvest at its core has one major problem that can't be fixed without a complete overhaul of the game, and that's the fact that it lacks its own identity as a game. To put this briefly, this game was clearly inspired by Stardew Valley, which itself isn't a bad thing but when you have direct references between the two, it's difficult to not think this is Stardew Valley with a gimmick. A clear example of this is the evil corporation Slime Corp making direct comparison with Joja Mart as an untrusted entity in the town who are situated out on the cusp of it.

Monster Harvest has the potential to be an excellent game. It has a fun premise, interesting points to the town and the story, and a beautiful open world to explore. However, it feels more than a little superficial and feels aimless in its execution of the story points. Hopefully, some updates to the game in the future bring out its fullest potential.
