My first experience with "feeding" was through Fate/Grand Order Diablo IV Gold, which was first made available by Japan in July of 2015 and earned a total of 4 billion dollars globally in 2019. To create a character that was the best possible, I needed to obtain duplicates of each one. And when a particular banner rolled around I was able to pay up to 300 euros in order to obtain the 5-star character that I had been looking for for years. However, I did not get the copies I needed in order to see the full potential of this character. With rates for the most sought-after 5-star characters being around 11%, it's no surprise I never managed to acquire a replica of the character when I was enjoying the game (which I have since uninstalled). As of July 20, 2021, Fate/Grand Order was the seventh highest grossing mobile game the past, and was placed in front of Konami's Puzzle Dragons, which could be added to the list because it is also a gacha game.
During a GDC 2021 talk, Genshin Impact developer Hoyoverse (previously Mihoyo) outright admitted that the way it created characters was based on generating the highest amount of money from its fans. For example, the Raiden Shogun and Kokomi characters reruns that took place in March 2022 alone netted the company more than $33 million in revenue.
The moment was immortalized by humor and memes, the bulk of it rooted in low expectations from the crowd: People attending BlizzCon 2018 were expecting "cheap Diablo 4 Gold" news. However, it was also a result of a lingering stigma around game consoles in the West and the US, where the acceptance of smartphones as gaming platforms has been slower than in the majority part of the world.
