A decade later, after Diablo 2. the next entry Diablo 3 was released. It is the return of players to the world of Sanctuary twenty years after the events of Diablo 2 and its expansion. Deckard Cain, an eminent NPC on the Diablo series, who helps players on their quests, returns to investigates Tristram Cathedral in search of clues about a prophecy. But before that, an exploding star hits the building , creating an erupting crater in Diablo 4 Gold which Deckard disappears. After searching for the crater, and rescuing Deckard, players find the Archangel Tyrael and assist him to restore his memories lost.

Astonished by the indifference of his fellow angels in regards to humanity's suffering and the demon scourge in Sanctuary The Tyrael has decided to become mortal so that he can help warn the human race about the coming from the Demon Lords. Players must counter the demonic forces and find their Black Soulstone, which has the power to imprison spirits of the seven of the Lords in Hell. However, the players and their companions are snubbed in the process and Black Soulstone is used instead to resurrect Diablo with Leah Deckard's ward as his vessel. Diablo now has all the souls the Gods of Hell within him , and begins his assault against the High Heavens. Diablo will eventually be defeated. Tyrael remains in the High Heavens, determined to establish a stronger bond that binds them to their mortal world.

Within the expanded pack Reaper of Souls, Tyrael is able to retrieve the Black Soulstone and attempts to lock it away in Sanctuary. But before he can, he is attacked by Malthael, a former Archangel of Wisdom who has now become an Angel of Death, and it is discovered that the Black Soulstone is stolen. Malthael is determined to eliminate humanity, believing that they could be demonic thanks to their ancestral roots as descendants of angels as well as demons. He eventually breaks the Black Soulstone and absorbs the power of the Seven Evils before being killed by the player and releasing seven evils from their shackles.

With the launch of the next Diablo game coming up the players are looking forward to seeing what direction the series may go with the narrative.
