My Bible Is The KJV.

I am not as Dr. Peter Ruckman described himself, a Christian with an attitude, but I do agree with Dr. Ruckman's choice the the AV1611 KJV is the ONLY Bible, here is why ....

I have stated this many times before and I know people may be a bit defensive about it but I am going to explain with one verse why I choose the KJV bible.

King James Version (KJV) 1 Corinthians 13:13 - And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Darby - And now abide faith, hope, love; these three things; and the greater of these is love.

World English Bible - But now faith, hope, and love remain--these three. The greatest of these is love.

Young's - and now there doth remain faith, hope, love -- these three; and the greatest of these is love.

NIV - And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
and on and on.....

There is one difference in the KJV that doesn't often show in any other versions of the Bible. Love is replaced by charity. That may seem minor to you. You may think I am nitpicking. But I am not. To understand why I feel so strongly about this you need not look any further than our accepted definition of both words.

Charity - Merriam Webster defines as - generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering also : aid given to those in need and also as benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity

Love - strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties , attraction based on sexual desire : affection and tenderness felt by lovers , an assurance of affection , and multiple other explanations of the word.

So let's compare the two and look at the original Greek word:  ἀγάπη which is defined as love, affection, esteem, specifically the love between God and humanity ...

There now stop. Think on that a little bit.

Think of the actions, emotions, definitions and all the instances where LOVE can be used as a noun or verb. They are multiple. Possibly infinite. I love pizza. I love my wife. I love reading. I love music. etc etc etc...

Now, take a few moments and think on the word charity. Charity is distinctly different than love. More often than not it implies a gift without reward to the giver. If it were a gift with reward it may be considered a favor or a deal. If it were a gift to be re-payed, it is a loan. Charity in it's purest form is a gift given FREELY, with NO thought of recompense.

Now let's go back and look at how that one word changes the meaning of the entire verse in the Bible. With the word "love" the verse tells us that love is the greatest of the three actions mentioned. Faith and hope being the other two. The translators of the KJV Bible were presented with the word ἀγάπη well over 200 times in the original scriptures and letters and documents. 86 times they did use the translated word as LOVE. 28 times they used CHARITY. Why the difference ? The difference lies in the definition and the context the verse presents the word.

Still confused ? You shouldn't be. I can quote you bible verse after bible verse that shows the difference in what love is versus charity. Almost every Christian knows John 3:16. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. - This is the entry verse in the bible that most Christians easily understand as the door to opening themselves to their salvation. In this verse we also find those two words we are currently looking at "for God so LOVED..." "He GAVE" .... There it is, right in front of you. God's proof of love for you is a CHARITY. God GAVE you His son so that you could live.

It is that simple. The GREATEST is CHARITY, not love, because through CHARITY you have been gifted with everlasting life.

I agree with the KJV definition and use of the word CHARITY in that singular verse. When Paul was writing to the Corinthians he specifically wrote - 1 Cor -
Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:
So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Ah THERE IT IS ! In his introduction to the church of Corinth. The gift.

I happened to get very lucky early on in my life. I had some issues in my teens and my mother gave me a THE WAY Bible . I remember it. It was orange. That was an NLT bible - here's their idea of that verse -

1 Cor 13 Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

Yeah that kind of left it all out, didn't it ?
The reason I mentioned that bible was I already had a bible. It was a KJV that belonged to my Grandfather and was given to me when he passed away in 1966. I was only 6. I still have that bible, but when I was that young, I didn't understand half of what I read in the KJV.  It was my mother giving me a THE WAY bible which initially made me notice the HUGE differences in what little I did know of the bible. From 1975 to 1979 I read both bibles. Often comparing the two and even more often leaning towards the KJV. The NLT just felt weak to me. Needless to say the differences between the two set me on a course to resolve (at least in my own mind) what bible IS THE CORRECT bible ? For me, it was important. If I am going to read God's Word, I want it to be God's Word, not man's idea of what he thinks God said... After reading about King James, the building of the bible named after him, the differences in so many different versions, I settled on the KJV and have stayed with it. When I study I use a Thompson chain refernce KJV and a Strong's exhaustive concordance and two KJV's one of which I will write in and make notes, one of which I don't. That NLT bible ended up in the trash (which is where it belongs).

You may read this and feel I am being an elitist or want to argue that any bible that brings you to God through Christ is a good thing, and I would agree with you. But once there in Christ, it is my opinion you need the definitive version of the bible. The KJV - because of one word wrongly translated in all other versions. LOVE over CHARITY. Nope.... CHARITY got you your salvation. That is the greatest of them all.

Take care.
