Florida's beaches and amusement parks get all the attention, but the Sunshine State has so much more to offer than meets the eye.

Florida's beaches and amusement parks get all the attention, but the Sunshine State has so much more to offer than meets the eye. This is shown by Micanopy, a little town not far from here.

Micanopy, named after a respected Seminole leader, is one of the smallest and oldest inland towns in Florida (it was established in 1821) and has a population of just approximately 650 people. Don't be fooled by the numbers, however. Micanopy may be small in comparison to other Florida destinations, but it more than makes up for it with its unique charm, history, eccentric antique shops, and surprising fauna.

Micanopy's Top Attractions

Cholokka Boulevard, the beating heart of Micanopy, is framed by 19th-century brick buildings and towering oak trees covered in Spanish moss; here you'll discover quaint cafés, art galleries, and stores selling vintage clothing, records, books, and more.

Micanopy bills itself as Florida's "antique capital," so it's a great spot to look for vintage goods. It's called "The Town That Time Forgot" for a reason. Among the more than a dozen antique stores strewn across town, particularly along Cholokka Boulevard, Delectable Collectables is a favorite. Furthermore, Micanopy's merchants are welcoming and forthcoming with information about the town and its history as well as their wares.

The Micanopy History Society has a museum driving directions and archives where you may learn more about the town's official history. Now that you have some background information, you may take the next step in your education by visiting the Micanopy Historic Cemetery, which was included on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Micanopy's Finest Lodgings

Hiking trails and state parks in the region are a must-see for energetic vacationers who need a break from shopping and window-shopping. Trails at the Native American Heritage Preserve and Tuscawilla Preserve provide a distinct world only minutes from the restaurants and antiques of Cholokka Boulevard.

Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is located not far from Micanopy. You may fish or paddle on Lake Wauburg, but you'll need to bring your own gear. There are also nine trails for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding, as well as a visitor center with plenty of useful information. The park's 50-foot observation tower is the best place to take in the scenery and see bison, alligators, wild horses, and some of the park's 300 recorded bird species.

The place to stay in Micanopy

Herlong Mansion Bed Breakfast is the only place to stay in Micanopy that always exceeds expectations. This site dates back to the early 20th century and has been recognized by the National Park Service as meriting preservation because of its historical significance. The entry is flanked by four massive Corinthian columns, inviting visitors to relax in the shade of the front terrace. There are swing beds on the second-floor veranda, perfect for taking a sleep or reading a book.

The property's 13 rooms, apartments, and cottages all provide a tasteful combination of Victorian aesthetics and contemporary conveniences. You can expect a hearty, three-course breakfast every morning, along with freshly baked cookies and wine in the evenings, courtesy of Micanopy's warm and welcoming Southern hospitality.

If the Herlong House is full during your visit, you may always stay in neighboring Gainesville. The college town, reachable in about 20 minutes, provides several lodging and leisure options.
