Cuphead is a traditional top-down shooter that puts an emphasis on boss fights. Traditional hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings were used to painstakingly recreate the film's visual style and sound to reflect that of classic 1930s cartoons.
